Vital Volunteers is a graduate occupational therapy student-led event offering free screenings of blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry, respiratory rate, and temperature. Interested participants will join a student pair station to have their vitals checked. Students will introduce themselves and the purpose of general wellness screenings and what to expect when having their vital signs checked. Participants will be provided a card with their recorded values. Participants will also have access to general health and wellness materials created by the students and are encouraged to engage in discussion about interested topics.
Participating students will have completed vital assessment competencies prior to the event. At least two licensed clinical faculty will be present to oversee and monitor student performance. Normal values for each vital sign will be posted at each student station as a guide for reference. Should any readings be deemed outside of the norm, clinical faculty will provide recommendations for primary care follow-up.
Kelly Otchet, DrOT, OTR/L and Lynda Lemisch, OTD, OTR/L, CLCP, CAPS, ATP are clinical assistant professors in the Occupational Therapy program at SJU.
