Have you ever used a tool to help you read fine print, get dressed, or feel more stable in the shower? Guess what? You are already using an assistive device! Assistive devices can help us in all areas of our lives, from the kitchen, to the car, to the bedroom, to do tasks that would otherwise be difficult or painful.
If you want to learn more about assistive technologies that may help you live a safer and independent life, this presentation by Laura Grassia from TechOWL (Technology for our whole lives) can help. She will speak to Penn’s Village about various assistive technologies, share amazing resources, and explain how we can support you to explore, learn about, and get the assistive technology that you need.
Laura Grassia has been Pennsylvania’s Telecommunication Device Distribution Program Manager since October 2018. Prior to joining the Institute on Disabilities’ TechOWL team at Temple University, Laura worked with adults and the aging in long term care settings since 1999. She obtained a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Music Therapy from Immaculata University. “Throughout my career I didn’t know I was using assistive technology with my clients. I learned they wanted to return to their past hobbies but had different functional needs. Together through trial and error, we would come up with a way to make that happen.”
Laura has an active role as the business manager and singer of the longest running feminist choir in the country called Anna Crusis Feminist Choir. She also is actively learning American Sign Language and enjoys baking traditional Italian cookies, cakes and pastries for friends and family.
