Part 3 of the Inclusiveness and Diversity Committee’s series on Racism and Aging

America’s long history of slavery, Jim Crow laws, redlining policies and inequities in education and health care have not only caused economic disparities for Black Americans, they have prevented Black families from building and transferring wealth. This program will describe the history that led to the wealth gap and discuss potential solutions that will allow Black families to more easily build wealth and pass it on to future generations. This a Zoom program with plenty of time for audience participation and questions.

Dr. Patience Lehrman is  Executive Director of the Intergenerational Center and the Center for Professional Development in Career and Technical Education at Temple University. She leads the development and implementation of grant-funded programs serving children and families in Philadelphia, providing support group and respite services to older adults in kinship families, connecting youth and young adults to  postsecondary and workforce opportunities, and preparing Career and Technical Educators in eastern Pennsylvania. She serves on several
advisory committees, including the Mayor's Commission on Aging.

Wealth Building in Communities Adversely Impacted by Systemic Racism

(Resources related to the Penn’s Village Program on September 14, 2023)

We have prepared a list of resources for you to download that we found helpful in preparing for this program. The document also provides a list of local sources of assistance aimed at helping prevent or manage impediments to personal/family wealth-building.

Specifically, the articles in Section I: Informational Background Reading that show how Philadelphia itself has been impacted by redlining, inequitable allocation of the GI bill, and so on will help explain and amplify the graphics found in the video presentation. The remaining readings in Section I  help clarify the overall concept of the generational wealth gap.

The second section of our Resources for Wealth Building document download (see Section II: Local Resources) provides information on where Philadelphians with specific questions or concerns can go for help. Please share this list with friends and family who may be interested or searching. And, if you know of other such resources, please feel free to email the resource to Lynn Trotter lynn@pennsvillage  and it will be added to this valuable list.

Due to the length of this important program, the recorded video was divided into Parts 1 & 2 found below.
