During the COVID-19 pandemic, Asians and Asian-Americans have been scapegoated for causing and spreading the coronavirus and are at increased risk of racial discrimination.

“Stop AAPI Hate,” an anti-Asian incident reporting website, received 10,370 incident reports from March 2020 to September 2021.

Within the context of current xenophobia and anti-Asian rhetoric during the COVID-19 pandemic, the panel discussed a qualitative interview study which aims to understand racial discrimination experiences and parental racial socialization among Asian American families.

Xinwei Zhang, PhD, is a postdoc associate at the Yale Child Study Center at Yale University. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative and International Education from Lehigh University. Her research interests include understanding acculturation, parental involvement, family-school partnerships, racial discrimination experiences, and mental health among individuals and families from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The panel will include Anu Sachdev, an adjunct professor of early childhood education at East Stroudsburg University, Lehigh University and Carbon Community College in Pennsylvania. Her current research interests are focused on understanding family engagement and school partnerships of multilingual immigrant families.

They will also be joined by Dr. Nino Dzotsenidze, who has twenty years of experience in international education working with Georgian government, US non-profit organizations, and public and private higher education institutions. Dr. Dzotsenidze has been involved in research about discrimination experiences of the Asian community in the U.S. and has co-authored the article “From ‘How are you doing?’ to ‘Have you eaten?’: Understanding the daily lived experiences of Asians in America during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
